The divorce statistics in the United States are a very interesting read. Here are some things you might not have known about marriage and divorce in our country:
" Most people get married between the ages of twenty to twenty four. After that the rate starts to fall for both men and women, though it falls more dramatically for women than it does for men. For example, only eight and a half percent of women between the ages of thirty to thirty four get married while almost twelve percent of the men in the same age group get married.
" The rate of divorce increases with the number of marriages a person has. Between forty one percent and fifty percent of first marriages end in divorce; sixty to sixty seven percent of second marriages end in divorce and between seventy three and seventy four percent of third marriages end in divorce.
" Married couples who have children are less likely to get divorced than married couples who do not have children, but this difference is very small. It is being debated as to whether or not childlessness is actually a cause of many of the divorces among childless married couples. Sixty six percent of all divorced couples were childless when they ended their marriages.
" The United States has the highest rate of divorce in the world. 5 people per thousand are divorced in this country. The country with the lowest rate of divorce is Sri Lanka with .15 people per thousand being divorced. World wide, 1.3 people per thousand are divorced.
" Nevada is the state with the highest rate of divorce and the District of Columbia has the fewest.
" The number of marriages declined in 2005. There were forty six thousand fewer marriages in 2005 than there were in 2004. This is something of an anomaly because the population rose by 2.9 percent in the same time period.
" 2005's divorce rate was the lowest the country had seen since the year 1970. So far the year with the most divorces was 1981.
" "Shacking up" is on the rise. 8.1 percent of coupled homes were homes in which the couples were not married.
" Only sixty three percent of the children in the United States grow up with both of their biological parents. This is the lowest rate of any country in the Western World.
" Most marriages happen between the months of June and October with August having the most of any month in 2005. January has consistently had the fewest marriages.
" Ten percent of the population is divorced. Twenty four percent of the population in the United States has never been married (and therefore has never been divorced either).
" The average age of a man's first divorce is thirty while the first divorce for women is averaging at age twenty nine.
" Only five percent of married couples reach their fiftieth wedding anniversary.
" The average length of a first marriage is almost eight years.
