Divorce Advice

You might not be ready to hear it yet, but sometimes divorce really is the best thing for everybody involved. Of course the process is a hard and painful one, but when all is said and done, it is usually what needed to happen. That doesn't mean that the decision to get divorced will be an easy one or that getting divorced is simple. It can be a very complicated process. Here is some divorce advice:

Divorce Advice Tip #1: Get a lawyer. Even if you and your spouse think that dissolving your marriage is going to be a simple and civilized process, you should still talk to a lawyer. If you think it will help keep things "friendly" you can get the same lawyer who will act as a mediator and help you fill out your divorce papers correctly. Of course, even the friendliest of dissolutions can turn ugly quickly-this is why you need a lawyer. The lawyer will know how to divide the assets equally or how to make sure your interests are protected. If for no other reason, you need to consult with a lawyer to make sure that you are following the letter of the law throughout your divorce. Don't rely on the internet for legal advice-talk to a lawyer.

Divorce Advice Tip #2: Make copies of everything. This is worth repeating: Make copies of everything. This means copying all of the important financial information-tax returns, bank statements, pay stubs, investment paperwork, credit card bills, the deed to your home and the titles to your vehicles. If it looks important, make a copy. Keep copies of everything from the last three years of your marriage. Making copies is important for memories too. Dividing up the photographs and home movies is going to be a horrible process-it can be made much easier if you make copies of all of the movies and photos. In our digital age, this isn't nearly the extensive process that it was even five years ago.

Divorce Advice Tip #3: Keep an inventory of everything in your home and all of your assets and what everything is worth. This is actually a good idea even if you aren't thinking of getting a divorce. Keeping an inventory of everything in your home is important for insurance and (sometimes) tax purposes. If something happens to your home-fire, flood, robbery, you will have a record of everything that needs to be replaced or repaired. This will also help in the division of property and assets that will happen in your divorce. If you have everything written down, it is less likely that you will forget something. Once you have divided everything up, create a new inventory of everything you are supposed to have to make sure that, after the moving and everything is done that you actually have it.

Getting divorced is never fun, but it is important that when you seek divorce advice, you seek it from someone who is impartial. A family law lawyer is often best.

How to Get a Divorce Tip #1

You need a lawyer. Even if you think that things will stay friendly and both you and your spouse make every effort to keep them that way, a lawyer must be consulted to make sure that everything is filled out and filed correctly. You can use the same lawyer if you want to keep the costs down, but a lawyer must be consulted.

How to Get a Divorce Tip #2

Your County Clerk is the best place to go for divorce forms and filings. They will have the forms that are the most up to date. Using older forms can waste time and money when you are forced to fill out a more current version. Laws and forms change all the time, make sure yours are the correct ones to use!

How to Get a Divorce Tip #3

This is not going to be an easy time for you. Even if you and your spouse are convinced that the divorce is in both of your best interests and things remain friendly, ending a marriage is never an easy process. Make sure you have a good system of support surrounding you to help you get through it.
